My Name.
Hi it’s Kachina,
As you should know from my about me my name means sacred dancer, spirit. But what you don’t know is that I was also named after a religious icon, the Kachina doll. Kachina dolls are actually stylized religious icons that are carved from cottonwood root and painted to represent figures from Hopi myths. For generations, these figures have been used to teach children about their religion; no Hopi child has ever teethed on a Kachina doll or taken one to bed, I doubt any non-Hopi child has either. Only Hopi artists make authentic kachina dolls. There are plenty of other tribes with their own figurine-carving traditions, but the Kachina tradition is unique to the Hopi. When you see Navajo Kachina or Mexican Kachina, those are imitations of the real Hopi Kachina, just as much so as Kachina made by white people or imported from Korea are. Genuine Kachina dolls are made by only a small number of Hopi carvers who have dedicated their lives to this art–it takes years of practice and religious study to master Kachina carving. I thought you might want to know what the history behind my name was.

I have got to go now.
